5. John COCHRANE [ Parents ]. Born about 1825 in St Lukes, Middlesex. This location was given as John’s birthplace in the 1851 census and is probably a reference to St Luke’s Parish, Old Street, Finsbury, where his sister Louisa was baptized. John died 25/12/1874 at Spenser Road, South Hornsey, age about 59. Cause of death: Congestion of the lungs 4 or 5 months. Occupation: House decorator. On 13/4/1846, when John was age about 21, he married Mary Ann WITPEN , daughter of Carsten WITPEN and Mary POOLE . Mary Ann was born 17/1/1825 and baptized 20/2/1825 at St Mary Whitechapel. She died 11/2/1865 at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, age 40. Cause of death certified as Carcinoma of Pylorus. They had the following children, all baptized in St John the Baptist, Shoreditch: (1) Mary Ann , born 2/5/1846 and baptized 21/6/1846. She died 12/10/1904 at 5 Halcombe Street, Shoreditch, age 58. Cause of death certified as Chronic Bronchitis 6 years; Acute Bronchitis 10 days; Cardiac Failure. On 19/2/1866, when Mary Ann was age 19, she married John ROGERS in the parish church of St James the Great, Bethnal Green. (2) Eliza , born 27/12/1847 and baptized 16/1/1848. (3) Henry [ 10 ] . (4) Emily , born 29/12/1851 in Shoreditch and baptized 1/9/1852. Emily died 9/8/1913 in Prince of Wales General Hospital, Tottenham, age 61. Cause of death certified as Carcinoma of stomach, liver and transverse colon. On 19/2/1872, when Emily was age 20, she married George A. BAKER in the parish church of St James the Great, Bethnal Green. Their daughter Emily, born 6/1/1872 in Shoreditch, married Charles Frederick CHAPPLE son of William Henry CHAPPLE and Catherine TIPPINS . (5) Charles , born 24/1/1854 and baptized 15/2/1854. He died 18/4/1857, age 3. Cause of death certified as Scalatina Maligna 7 days. (6) Frederick , born 30/1/1856 and baptized 30/4/1856. He died 28/8/1874, age 18, and was buried in Victoria Park Cemetery (now known as Meath Gardens) on 3/9/1874. Cause of death certified as Scrofula and Malformation 8 years. (7) Benjamin [ 11 ] . (8) Louisa , born 28/1/1860 and baptized 22/2/1860. She died 3/7/1860, age 5 months, and was buried in Victoria Park Cemetery on 9/7/1860. Cause of death certified as Scarlatina 11 days. (9) Clara , born 24/6/1861 and baptized 17/7/1861. She died 8/10/1936 in 31 Rue de Coulmiers, 14th Arrondissement of Paris, age 75. On 16/4/1887, when Clara was age 25, she married Theodore JENN (1863-1905), a photographer born in Luxembourg, in Paris. The marriage declaration confirms their intention to recognise the legitimacy of two children born to Clara before the marriage: Emilia Alphonsine born 14/8/1881 and Louis Alphonse Rene born 4/1/1884, both in Paris. (10) John [ 12 ] . There’s evidence suggesting Sarah EVANS (nee Anderson) was John’s “common law” wife. Sarah, the widow of Joseph EVANS (1823-1870), a coal porter, was born about 1827 in Uxbridge and died 16/12/1897 at 35 Spenser Road, Edmonton, age given as 68 on the death certificate. Cause of death certified as Chronic bronchitis many years; Exhaustion. Sarah was named as informant on the death certificates of both John, in 1870, and his son Frederick, in 1874. Her daughter Mary Ann EVANS married John's son Benjamin in 1880. Mary Ann was the informant of her mother's death when it was registered on 17/12/1897, when she merged the identities of Joseph Evans and John Cochrane to give Sarah's occupation on the death certificate as "widow of Joseph Cochrane Coal Porter".
