Fourth Generation
11. Herman WITPEN [ Parents ]. Born about 1827 in Spitalfields, Herman died 1905 in Bethnal Green, age about 78. Occupation: House painter. On 4/2/1850, when Herman was age about 22, he married Elizabeth JOPSON (1830-1870), daughter of John Richard JOPSON , a Map colourer, in St Philip’s Church, Bethnal Green. They had the following children: (1) Elizabeth , born around 1850. It’s not known when Elizabeth died. (2)   Herman , born around 1859 in Spitalfields. It’s not known when Herman died. (2) Thomas , born around 1860 in Spitalfields. It’s not known when Thomas died. (3) Letitia , baptized 13/1/1867 in Christ Church, Commercial Street, Stepney. It’s not known when Letitia died. (4) Frederick , born 1868 in Spitalfields. It’s not known when Frederick died. 12. Walter Cosson WITPEN [ Parents ]. Born 4/4/1854 in Haggerston, Walter died November 1940 in Manchester, age 86. Walter was buried 16/11/1940 in the Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester. Occupation: Shirt and collar cutter. In 1878, when Walter was age about 24, he married Rebecca Ellen STANDLEY (1854-1927), daughter of John STANDLEY and Hannah Gardiner HART , in Chorlton, Manchester. They had the following children: (1) Olive , born 7/11/1880 in Manchester and died there in 1967, age 86. In 1907, when Olive was age 26, she married Bertram Morphet SCAMMELL (1881-1968) in Chorlton. (2) Violet , born 1885 in Chorlton and died there 1888, age 3. (3) Walter Standley , born 1888 in Chorlton and died there 1889, age 1. 13. Henry WITPEN [ Parents ]. Born 15/7/1840 in Turnham Green, Henry died 26/5/1882 in Mile End Old Town, age 41. Occupation: Hot presser of paper. On 10/8/1863, when Henry was age 23, he married Elizabeth HEATHER (1840-9/2/1909) in Peper Harow, Surrey. They had the following children: (1) Henry George , born 6/8/1864 in Mile End Old Town and died 27/7/1866 in Peper Harow, age 23 months. (2) George , born 19/11/1865 in Mile End Old Town and died there in 1871, age about 5. (3) William [ 15 ] . (4) Charles , born 1870 in Mile End Old Town and died 19/5/1942, age 72. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “WITPEN Charles of Heather Cottage Hendon Wood-lane Mill Hill London NW7 died 19 May 1942 at 17 Well House Lane, Barnet, Hertfordshire Probate Llandudno 17 August to Ann Elizabeth Witpen widow. Effects £999 13s 7d”. (Worth around £48,000 today.) On 28/9/1896, when Charles was age 26, he married Ann Elizabeth COOPER (1871-1955) in Christchurch, Hampshire. There’s no evidence had any children. (5) Alfred [ 16 ] . (6) Albert , born 11/6/1874 in Mile End Old Town and died there 20/4/1879, age 4. (7) Elizabeth Flora , born 27/6/1881 in Mile End Old Town and baptized 14/8/1881 in Christ Church, Watney Street, St George in the East. She died 29/12/1961, age 80. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “WATLING Elizabeth Flora of 53 Addison Way London NW11 widow died 29 December 1961 at Roxbourne Hospital, Rayners Lane, Harrow Middlesex Probate London 14 February [1962] to Lilian Emma Downer (wife of Alfred John Downer). Effects £357 6s 8d”. (Worth around £7,635 today.) In 1922, when Elizabeth Flora was age about 40, she married Philip Lawther WATLING (1872-1953) in Hendon. There’s no evidence they had any children. 14. William WITPEN [ Parents ]. Born 31/7/1852 in St George in the East and baptized 5/9/1852 in St Mary and St Michael, Commercial Road, Stepney. William died 21/10/1938 in Tooting, age 86. Occupation: Solicitor's Clerk. William’s entry in Kelly's London Suburban Directory 1902 was: Witpen William, clerk, 114 Pembroke Road, Ilford. On 23/7/1876, when William was age 23, he married Sarah Jane WELLS (1851-1893), daughter of Joseph WELLS , a Farrier, in St Andrew, Holborn, London. They had the following children: (1) Jane Caroline , born 28/4/1877 in Holborn, it’s not known when she died. On 8/9/1901, when Jane was age 24, she married Albert Henry SWAIN (1879-?) in All Saints, Newington. (2) William Charles , born 4/9/1878 in Holborn and died 1882 in Camberwell, age 3. (3) Albert Henry , born 28/11/1879 in Holborn and died December 1900 in Camberwell, age 21. On 5/11/1900 Albert was admitted to St George's Workhouse, Mint Street, Southwark and discharged at own request on 10/11/1900. He was admitted again on 28/11/1900 and discharged 3/12/1900, dying shortly afterwards. (4) Joseph Charles [ 17 ] . (5) Charles , born 29/9/1885 in Camberwell and baptized 28/9/1888 in Emmanuel, Camberwell. It’s not known when Charles died. (6) Herbert Arthur (his birth was registered under this name but he was baptized Albert Arthur), born 31/3/1888 in Camberwell and baptized 28/9/1888 in Emmanuel, Camberwell. Herbert died 1958 in Poplar, age 70. In 1950, when Herbert was age 62, he married Jessie GRIONI (1871-1953) in Westminster. In 1955, when Herbert was age 67, he married Hertha Meta KOPPEN or GARTH * (1902-1974) in Westminster. *There’s a marriage registration with the same reference for each surname. (7) Walter Arthur , born 25/4/1893 in Camberwell and baptized 18/6/1893 in Emmanuel, Camberwell. He died later that year. On 27/1/1895, when William was age 42, he married widow Margaret DATHAN nee Jennings (1853-1898), daughter of James JENNINGS , a Brush maker, in St Mary Magdalene, Southwark. There’s no evidence they had any children.
