First Generation
1. George JOHNSON . Born 5/5/1809 in Stepney and baptized 18/6/1809 in St George in the East Church, Whitechapel. George died in October 1856 in Stepney, age 47. He was buried on 15/10/1856 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Southern Road, London. Occupation: Variously butcher, labourer, coal dealer. On 4/4/1831, when George was age about 21, he married Sarah BATCHELOR in St Dunstan, Stepney. Sarah was born about 1806 in Surrey. It is not known when she died. They had the following children: (1) George , baptized 11/3/1832 in St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney. The Parish Register records the family’s abode as Mile his End Old Town, father’s occupation butcher. George died in February 1857 in Stepney, age 25. He was buried 25/2/1857 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. (2) John Hatchtal [ 2 ] . (3) Francis [ 3 ] . (4) James [ 4 ] . (5) Sarah Maria , born 8/2/1845 in Stepney and baptized 20/4/1845 in St Mary, Whitechapel.  The Parish Register records the family’s abode as York Street, father's occupation greengrocer. Sarah Maria died 1874 in Bethnal Green, age 29. On 11/7/1868, when Sarah Maria was age 23, she married William Duncan STONE (1841-1909) in St Mary, Whitechapel. (5) Henry [ 5 ] .
Second Generation
2. John Hatchtal JOHNSON [ Parents ]. Born 28/4/1838 and baptized 20/5/1838 in St Mary, Whitechapel. John’s middle name is unusual but is confirmed by both the baptism and birth registration entries. It’s not known when John died but he does not appear in the 1871 census. Occupation: Coal carrier. On 15/8/1859, when John was age 21, he married Eliza Sarah WHEELER , in St Thomas, Stepney. Born about 1841 in Ratcliff and baptized 30/3/1841 in St Dunstan and All Saints, Stepney, Eliza Sarah died in February 1863, age 22. She was buried 10/2/1863 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. They had the following child: (1) John James , born May 1860 in Ratcliff, London, and baptized 7/4/1861 in St Thomas, Stepney. John James died 23/9/1874 in the London Hospital, Whitechapel, age 14. Cause of death certified as “violent fractured skull & other injuries to brain accidental” based on information received from John Humphreys, the coroner for Middlesex. John James was buried 30/9/1874 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. 3. Francis JOHNSON [ Parents ]. Born 16/1/1841 in Stepney and baptized 19/2/1843 in St Mary, Whitechapel. The Parish Register records the family’s abode as York Street, father's occupation greengrocer. Francis died 9/2/1931 in Bethnal Green Workhouse, age 90. Cause of death recorded as chronic bronchitis. The record also states that Francis was “buried by friends”. Occupation: House decorator. On 5/8/1865, when Francis was age 24, he married Eliza Mary BROWN in St Thomas, Stepney. Eliza was born about 1839 in Stepney.  It is not known when she died. They had the following children: (1) Francis , born about 1867 in St George in the East. (2) Edward Henry [ 6 ] . (3) Eliza Mary , born 1870 in St. George on the East. In 1894, when Eliza Mary was about 24, she married Alfred James JOHNSON , son of James JOHNSON and Caroline SWABEY (nee Styles), in Bethnal Green. Alfred James was born 1871 in Stepney. There is no evidence of a connection, other than this marriage, between these two Johnson families. (4) George , born about 1876 in Stepney. 4. James JOHNSON [ Parents ]. Born 28/1/1843 in Stepney and baptized 19/2/1843 in St Mary, Whitechapel. The Parish Register records the family’s abode as York Street, father's occupation greengrocer. James died in January 1912 in Hoxton, age 69. He was buried on 18/1/1912 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Southern Road, London. Occupation: Tobacconist; in 1911 a general labourer and “keeps a small general shop”. On 13/3/1864, when James was age 20, he married Mary Ann DOLMAN , daughter of Robert DOLMAN , a cork cutter, in St Mary’s Parish Church, St George in the East. Mary Ann was born about 1839 in Mile End and died 1876 in Medway, Kent, age 38. They had the following children: (1) James Robert [ 7 ] . (2) Albert George , born about 1866 in Chatham, Kent and died there about September 1872, age 6.  (3) Amy Sarah , born 8/12/1867 in Chatham. It's not known when she died. (4) Frank Frederick [ 8 ] . On 26/2/1877, when James was age 34, he married Ellen JOHNSON (nee McGoveran), his brother Henry’s widow, in St Margaret, Rochester, Kent. Ellen was born about 1850 in Borough, Surrey, and died October 1895 in Bromley Sick Asylum, Kent, age about 44. She was buried 24/10/1895 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. They had the following children: (1) Charles James , born 9/7/1877 in Chatham and baptized 1/8/1883 in St Peter, Maidstone. He died in 1955 in Eastbourne, age 78. (2) John , born 4/10/1879 in Chatham and baptized 1/8/1883 in St Peter, Maidstone. (3) Clara , born 1/11/1881 in Maidstone and baptized 1/8/1883 in St Peter, Maidstone. (4) Minnie , born 10/7/1884 in Maidstone and died 24/12/1968 in Southend-on-Sea, age 84. On 1/7/1918, when Minnie was age 33, she married William HELLERY (1884-1953) in St Matthew, City Road, Islngton. (5) George Thomas , born 10/12/1886 in Shoreditch. 5. Henry JOHNSON [ Parents ]. Born 4/11/1847 in Stepney and baptized 28/11/1847 in St Mary, Whitechapel. The Parish Register records the family’s abode as York Street, father’s occupation coal merchant. Henry died June 1875 in 2 Anglesea Street, Bethnal Green, age 27, and was buried 24/6/1875 in City of London and Tower Hamlets Cemetery. Occupation: House decorator, paper hanger. On 30/7/1871, when Henry was age 23, he married Ellen McGOVERAN (1850-1895), daughter of Charles McGOVERAN , a Blacksmith, in St George in the East, London. They had the following children: (1) Henry , born 26/6/1871 in 3 Vincent Street, Bethnal Green. It’s not known when Henry died. (2) Sarah , born 9/4/1875 in 34 Anglesea Street, Bethnal Green. It’s not known when Sarah died.
