The Harris Family of Harrold, Bedfordshire

This is page 4 of 4 tracing the descendants of Joshua Harris and Rebeckah MacQuire, originally of Harrold, Bedfordshire. Later generations lived in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire. It shows the fourth generation link by marriage to the Jones family. 12. Arthur William HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 14/9/1873 in Earley, Berkshire, Arthur William died 1959 in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, age 85. Occupation: General labourer; Blacksmith’s striker, Railway carriage works. In 1895, when Arthur William was age about 22, he married Mary Jane MARSHALL (1872-1967) in Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. They had the following children, all born Stantonbury, Buckinghamshire: (1) Lilian May , born 1897.  (2) George William , born 1899. (3) Albert Edward , born about 1901. (4) Kate Elizabeth , born 1903. (5) Ivy Kathleen , born 1907. (6) Beatrice Jane , born 1909. (7) Arthur C , born 17/3/1913. 13. Edward Charles HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 21/9/1874 in Earley, Berkshire, Edward died 1947 in Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, age 72. Occupation: General labourer. In 1900, when Edward was age 25, he married Caroline HARCOURT , daughter of Isaac HARCOURT and Sarah UMNEY , in Newport Pagnell. Caroline was born 30/8/1882 in Sherington, Buckinghamshire and died 6/2/1958 in Stony Stratford, Buckinghamshire, age 75. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “HARRIS Caroline of 4 King Street Stony Stratford Buckinghamshire widow died 6 February 1958 Probate Oxford to Sydney Harcourt Harris gas fitter and Lucy Maud Forrester (wife of Roland Forrester). Effects £255 19s. 4d.” (Worth around £6,000 today.) They had the following children: (1) Lucy Maud , born 1900 in Newport Pagnell. (2) Sydney Harcourt , born 31/10/1909 in Wolverton. Plus one other who has not been identified but was recorded in the 1911 census as having died. 14. Robert William HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 24/4/1875 in Northampton and baptized 25/12/1881 in St Edmund, Northampton. Robert William died in 1956 in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, age 80. He emigrated with his family to Canada, arriving on 30/3/1913 in Halifax, Nova Scotia from Liverpool on board the Tunisian. From 20/12/1914 to 19/7/1915 Robert served in the 46th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force. He probably returned to England at some point after discharge - there's evidence he left Liverpool on 8/6/1921 for Quebec, arriving there on 16/6/1921. On 26/12/1904, when Robert William was age 29, he married Ellen Maude BRAFIELD (1884-?), daughter of William BRAFIELD a Farm Bailiff, in St John the Baptist, Hartwell, Northamptonshire. They had the following children: (1) Donald Seymour , born 6/5/1907 in Brixworth and died 17/10/1991 in South Norbury, London, age 84. (2) Robert Douglas , born 31/7/1913 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, and died 7/3/1945 when his Avro Lancaster (serial number ME428) was shot down by Heinz-Wulf Schnaufer, the latter's 121st and final aerial victory, crashing at Colbitz, near Magdeburg, Germany. Robert served in the Royal Canadian Airforce from 8/7/1942 until his death. 15. William HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 27/7/1877 in St Giles, Northampton, William died 1963 in Brixworth, Nothamptonshire, age 85. Occupation: Cycle and motor engineer; later Town Hall Keeper. In 1904, when William was age about 26, he married Helen Jane CRICK (1880-1963) in Brixworth. They had the following children: (1) Greta Douglas , born 15/6/1905 in Northampton and died there 1987, age 82. In 1946, when Greta was age about 40, she married Owen BOLTON (1900-1956) in Northampton. In 1959, when Greta was age  about 53, she married Francis William HOARE (1892-1987) in Northampton. (2) Bernard , born 12/6/1908 in St James, Northampton and died there in 1990, age 82. In 1939, when Bernard was age 31, he married Dora Lavinia STOCKWELL (1910-1997), daughter of Thomas STOCKWELL and Amy Rosina BILBY , in Northampton. (3) Gordon George , born 2/6/1910 in St Giles, Northampton and died there in 1999, age about 89. In 1940, when Gordon was age about 30, he married Mabel LINNELL (1912-1980) in Northampton. 16. Arthur Frank HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 1883 in St Albans and baptized 10/12/1883 in St Albans Abbey, Arthur Frank died 1934 in St Marylebone, age about 50. Occupation: Lead glazier. On 19/10/1907, when Frank was age 24, he married Louisa Caroline BANWELL , daughter of William and Louisa BANWELL , in St Matthew, Marylebone, London. Born 1885 in Harpenden, Hertfordshire, Louisa died 13/12/1972 in Thundersley, Essex, age 87. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “HARRIS Louisa Caroline of 55 Common Ln Thundersley Essex died 13 December 1972 Probate Ipswich 27 March £679.” (The equivalent of around £9,200 today.) They had the following children: (1) Edward Arthur , born about 1909 in Marylebone and died 1972 in Brent, age 63. (2) Sydney I , born 1911 in Marylebone and died there in 1926, age 14. 17. Sydney Thomas HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 21/4/1886 in St Albans, Sydney died 7/4/1965 in Willesden, London, age 79. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “HARRIS Sydney Thomas of 48 Dollis Hill Avenue Willesden London died 7 April 1965 Probate London 27 July to Harold Cross Pill estate agent and Thomas William Pinnock solicitor. £3596.” (The equivalent of around £69,420 today.) Occupation: Mechanical Engineering Works Foreman (1939). Sydney built model steam engines. One, a model vertical direct-acting Truslove steam pump, is held in the object store at the Science Museum, London. In 1911, when Sydney Thomas was age about 25, he married Ellen Elizabeth WALLER , daughter of Joseph WALLER and Eliza PUGH , in St Albans. Ellen Elizabeth was born 12/2/1886, also in St Albans, and died 1939 in Barnet, age 73. They had the following children, both born St Albans: (1) Evelyn Kathleen , born 27/6/1913 in St Albans and died 2001 in Buckinghamshire, age 88. On 26/9/1950, when Evelyn was age 37, she married Ernest Eric VARNEY (1908-2001) in Willesden. (2) Edwin Victor , born 28/12/1919 in St Albans and died July 1998 in Worthing, Sussex, age 78. In1949, when Edwin was age about 29, he married Joyce WALLER (1923-1990) in Westminster. They had one child who is still living. 18. Frederick HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 27/2/1896 in St Albans, Frederick died 13/11/1952 in Westminster Hospital, London, age 56. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “Harris Frederick of 10 Kings Way Wealdstone Harrow Middlesex died 13 November 1952 at Westminster Hospital London S.W.1 Probate London 3 February to Barclays Bank Limited. Effects £5499 5s. 8d.” (Worth around £164,420 today.) Occupation: Chartered secretary (1939); Bank manager. In 1923, when Frederick was age 27, he married Dorothy Clara HUTCHINGS in St Albans. Dorothy was born 29/8/1897 in St Albans and died 21/5/1988 in Wealdstone, age 90. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “HARRIS, Dorothy Clara of 10 Kings Way Wealdstone Harrow Middx died 21 May 1988 Probate Oxford 25 October £158925.” (Worth around £426,000 today.) They had the following children: (1) John Trevor , born 1932 in Hendon and died 24/11/1943, in the Middlesex County Council Sanatorium, Uxbridge, age 11. John’s cause of death was likely to be tuberculosis as the sanatorium specialised in its treatment. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “HARRIS John Trevor of 10 Kings Way Wealdstone Harrow Middlesex died 24 November 1943 at Middlesex County Council Sanatorium, Harefield, Uxbridge, Middlesex Administration Llandudno 27 January to Frederick Harris chartered secretary. Effects £409 11s. 7d.” (Worth around £18,420 today.) And 1 child who is still alive.
