16. George James LUCHFORD [Parents]. Baptized 4/9/1868 at St Margaret’s, Rochester, George James died 15/2/1939 in Lee-on-Solent, age 70. Occupation: Garrison Quartermaster Sergeant. George’s army service lasted from 31/5/1883 to 15/10/1901. There’s evidence that he served most of this time in India with the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment (click note icon for more information).
An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “LUCHFORD George James of Harlency Studland Road Lee on the Solent Hampshire died 15 February 1939 Probate London 12 April to Martins Bank Limited and Leonard Eustace Luchford bank clerk. Effects £4387 10s 2d. Resworn £4342 10s 1d.” (The equivalent of around £277,454 today.)
On 10/1/1894, when George was age 25, he married Helena Elizabeth HUNNISETT, daughter of Richard HUNNISETT, at the Wesleyan Church, Colaba Causeway, Bombay, India. Helena Elizabeth was born quarter ending June 1875 in Chatham & died 1/12/1946 in Bromley, age 71. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “LUCHFORD Helena Elizabeth of 47 Park Avenue Bromley Kent widow died 1 December 1946 Administration (with Will) London 12 April to Martins Bank Limited. Effects £1258 17s 11d.” (The equivalent of around £51,745 today.)
They had the following children:
(1) Harry George Ernest, born 28/10/1894 in Lucknow, India & killed in action 2/12/1917 during World War 1 in the vicinity of Zonnebeke, Belgium when his Bristol F2b plane was shot down by Walter von Bülow-Bothkamp. Captain Luchford was the holder of the Military Cross & bar, serving in the Royal Flying Corps, 20th Squadron. Read details of his victories in the air between 13/6/1917 & 21/10/1917 at The Aerodrome. Harry is remembered at the Arras Flying Services Memorial. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “LUCHFORD Harry George Ernest of Walmer Quernmore Road Bromley Kent captain R.F.C. died 2 December 1917 in France or Belgium Administration London 17 July to George James Luchford civil servant. Effects £459 18s 2d.” (The equivalent of around £35,894 today.) (2) Leonard Eustace, born 31/8/1896 in Plumstead and died 1974 in Hitchin, age 77. On 25/9/1926, when Leonard was age 30, he married Nellie Gwendoline MORGAN in Farnborough. Nellie was born 23/4/1902 in Wandsworth and died January 2007 in Kent, age 104. (3) Cyril Gordon, born quarter ending September 1898 in Plumstead. Cyril was awarded the Military Cross during World War 1. He departed from London on 17/10/1922 on board the “Largs Bay” bound for Melbourne, Australia. His occupation was given as motor engineer. Cyril appeared in the Electoral Registers for the Alphington district of Melbourne until 1977 when his address was given as 30 Yarraford Avenue. The last entry that included Dora Luchford (presumably Cyril’s wife) was 1972.
