9. William John HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 25/9/1859 in Halling, William John died 29/12/1931 in St Bartholomew’s hospital, Rochester, age 72. Cause of death: Fractured skull and cerebral contusion following a fall down the stairs of a motor bus. An inquest returned a verdict of Accidental Death. On 10/4/1879, when William John was age 19, he married Sarah Ann PANKHURST in Halling. Born 13/10/1861 in Malling, Sarah Ann died 4/6/1930 in Lower Halling (6 Manor Terrace), age 69. Cause of death certified as Heart failure; Cancer of pylorus. They had the following children: (1) William John [ 11 ] . (2) Alfred Thomas , born 28/10/1882 in Halling. (3) Helen , born about 1884. (4) Herbert George [ 12 ] . (5) Arthur , born 1886 and died 1888 age about 2. (6) Eliza Ann , born 1890. (7) Thomas James VC MM, born 30/1/1892 in Halling and died 9/8/1918 during the Battle of the Somme, age 26. Thomas is remembered in the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery extension, France. It contains 2,162 Commonwealth burials and commemorations of the First World War. His Victoria Cross is displayed at The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment Museum, Maidstone. Thomas Harris Close in Halling is named in his honour. (8) Ellen Mary , born 1895. (9) Frederick Henry , born 10/12/1904 in Snodland and died 1973 in Dartford, age 68. 10. Alfred HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 1864 in Halling, Alfred died 1896 in Halling, age about 31. In about 1888, when Alfred was age about 23, he married Alice Mary GORING in Strood. Alice Mary was born about 1865. It is not known when she died. They had the following children, all born in Halling: (1) Thomas Alfred , born 1888. (2) Alice Mary , born about September 1890. (3) Charles , born about 1892. (4) Frederick John , born 1894. (5) Elsie May , born 1897.

11. William John H arris [ Parents ]. Born 1/8/1879 in Halling, William John died 8/3/1953 in 6, Block Almshouses, Wrotham Road, Gravesend, age 73. Cause of death certified as Carcinoma of lung. On 13/4/1902, when William John was age 22, he married Alice Ethel STROUD , daughter of William Edward STROUD and Clara GLADDISH . Born 23/2/1882 in Halling, Alice Ethel died 3/6/1982 in Joyce Green Hospital, Dartford, age 100. Cause of death certified as Senile myocardial infarction. They had the following children: (1) Herbert William , born 17/1/1903 in Halling and died 10/2/1983 in Chatham, age 80. (2) Winifred , born 15/1/1905. (3) Ernest Edward , born 17/3/1907 and died later that year. (4) Leonard , born 3/2/1909. (5) Gilbert , born 12/1/1912. (6) William , born 5/2/1915 and died 1998, age about 83. (7) Doris , born 14/6/1916. (8) Victor , born 16/7/1919. (9) Grace , born 24/7/1921. 12. Herbert George HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 1/4/1885 in Halling, Herbert George died March 1968 in Dartford, age 82. On 10/3/1910, when Herbert George was age 24, he married Maud Alice THORNTON in Halling. Maud Alice was born 8/1/1888 in Halling and died 1956 in Chatham, age about 68. They had the following children, all born in Halling: (1) Ethel May , born 13/5/1910 and died 22/1/2000 in Fremantle, Australia, age 89. On 4/4/1936, when Ethel May was age 25, she married William James MARTIN , son of William MARTIN and Georgina POYNTER , in Halling. William was born 22/9/1909 in Cuxton and died 3/6/1974 in Fremantle, age 64. (2) Phyllis Edith , born 26/3/1911 and died September 1998 in Medway, Kent. On 29/12/1934, When Phyllis Edith was age 23, she married Norman Clyde MARTIN , son of William MARTIN and Georgina POYNTER , in Halling. Norman Clyde was born 29/6/1910 in Cuxton and died 1993 in Chatham, age 82. (3) Doris , born 3/8/1912. (4) Alice , born 13/8/1913 and died 1999, age about 86. (5) Herbert , born 25/7/1915 and died 1999 in Sheppey, age about 84. (6) Kathleen , born 27/1/1918 and died 1998, age about 79. (7) Frank , born 18/8/1919 and died in 1995, age about 76. (8) Kenneth , born 1925 and died 1995, age about 70. (9) Eric Arthur , born 28/3/1926 and died 8/3/1945 during the battle for Arnhem, age 19. Eric is remembered in the Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Kleve, Nordrhein Westfalen, Germany. There are 7,594 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery.
