The schedule numbering on this census page is out of sequence, and the street names different, so it is not possible to know for certain whose household James was lodging in

1871: On board the vessel “Viscount Lambton”, Gravesend, Kent. James Roots (married) age 30, born Luddesdowm Kent occ AB*. NA ref RG10/894/182. *Taken to mean "Able Seaman". As the name suggests, an “able” seaman would have served many years at sea & would be experienced in any duty he was asked to carry out. The vessel ”Viscount Lambton” was registered in Rochester, number 20057, had a 202 tonnage & moved coal from Kent to Sunderland
