The Roots Family of Luddesdown & Meopham, Kent

18.Link to census George Thomas ROOTS [Parents]. Born 9/6/1859 in Meopham, George died quarter ending March 1940 in Meopham, age 80. Occupation: Agricultural labourer; Woodcutter.

In the quarter ending June 1880, when George was age about 20, he married Alice Harriet DAVIS. Alice was born about 1862 in Hadlow, Alice died quarter ending March 1922 in Meopham, age about 59. An entry in the National Probate Calendar: “ROOTES Alice Harriett of Turner's Oak Ash Wrotham Kent (wife of George Thomas Rootes) died 30 January 1922 Administration (with will) London 29 March to the said George Thomas Rootes agricultural labourer. Effects £187 0s. 8d.” (The equivalent of around £8,247 today.)

They had the following children:

(1) Alice, born about 1880 in Meopham. (2) Louise Jane, born about 1883 in Meopham. (3) David, born quarter ending December 1887 in Strood. (4) Thomas Edward, born quarter ending March 1890 in Hartley. (5) George, born quarter ending March 1892 in Hartley. (6) Emily, born quarter ending June 1893 in Dartford. (7) Annie, born quarter ending June 1895 in Dartford. (8) James, born 31/12/1896 in Hartley. At some point before 1917, James emigrated to Australia & served in the Australian Navy from 10/12/1917 to 8/1/1920. See James’s Record of Service, courtesy of the National Achives of Australia. (9) William, born quarter ending  June 1898 in Ash. (10) Herbert Sidney, born quarter ending December 1899 in Ash. (11) Maud Elizabeth, born quarter ending June 1902 in Ash. (12) Ethel May, born born quarter ending March 1905 in Ash. (13) Florence Mary, born born quarter ending March 1907 in Ash.

19.Link to census David ROOTS [Parents].  Born about 1864 in Meopham, it is not known when David died. Occupation: Agricultural Labourer.

In the quarter ending December 1891, when David was age about 27, he married Sarah Ann BENNETT. Sarah Ann was born about 1871 in Wrotham.

They had the following children, all born Meopham unless stated otherwise:

(1) Emma, born quarter ending December 1893. (2) Emily Elizabeth, born quarter ending June 1895. (3) Sarah Ann Jane, born quarter ending December 1896. (4) Daniel, born quarter ending June 1898. (5) David, born quarter ending March 1900. (6) Edward John, born quarter ending March 1901. (7) Cecil James, born quarter ending March 1903 in Luddesdown. (8) Archibald Henry, born quarter ending June 1906. (9) Naomi Mary, born quarter ending March 1908 in Snodland.

20.Link to census Frank William ROOTS [Parents]. Born 3/9/1863 in Upper Halling, Frank William died at 1 Pilgrim Cottages, Upper Halling in March 1922, age 58. He was buried 11/3/1922 in Halling. Occupation: Foreman in chalk pits.

In 1882, when Frank was age 19, he married Emma TAYLOR.  Emma was born about 1865 in Buckinghamshire.

They had the following children, all born or baptized in Halling:

(1) Frank Herbert [23]. (2) Ada Emma, born quarter ending December 1885. (3) Ethel Elizabeth, born quarter ending June 1887. (4) Charles Daniel, born quarter ending September 1888. (5) Ruth, born about 1889. (6) Helena Naomi, born quarter ending June 1891. (7) Gertrude Sarah, born quarter ending September 1893. (8) Olive Hannah, born quarter ending December 1894. (9) Daniel George, born quarter ending December 1896 & died 30/3/1968, age 72, both in Halling. In the quarter ending September 1925, when Daniel was age 28, he married Rhoda PARRIS, daughter of Henry PARRIS & Ellen TOMKIN. (10) Naomi Ivy, born quarter ending June 1899. (11) Amos Frederick, born quarter ending June 1902 & died quarter ending December 1962 in Chatham, age 60. In 1929, when Amos was age about 28, he married Hilda M. HAMPTON in Strood. (12) Ivy Grace Clara, born quarter ending March 1906. (13) Horace Leonard, born quarter ending December 1907 & died 23/8/1963 in West Malling, age 55.

An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “ROOTS Horace Leonard of 4 Cascade Avenue West Malling Kent died 23 August 1963 Probate London 22 October to Florence Mary Roots widow. Effects £3747 2s.” (The equivalent of around £67,000 today.) In 1935, when Horace was age about 27, he married Florence Mary HARRIS in Strood.
