The Roots Family of Luddesdown & Meopham, Kent

1. Thomas ROOTS.  All we know is that Thomas married Mary CROUCHER in 1778 in Luddesdown.

They had the following children:

(1) John [2]. (2) George [3].

2.Link to census John ROOTS [Parents]. Baptized 10/5/1789 at St Peter & St Paul Church, Luddesdown, it is not known when John died. Occupation: Ag. Labourer.

On 12/11/1810, when John was age about 21, he married Mercy WELLER, daughter of Henry & Ann WELLER, in Chatham. Baptized 4/4/1790 in Cobham, Kent, Mercy died quarter ending September 1858 in North Aylesford district, age about 68.

They had the following children:

Link to census(1) John [4]. (2) Thomas [5]. (3) Henry, baptized 5/5/1816 in Meopham. In the quarter ending December 1842, when Henry was age 26, he married Mary Ann CLOUT. Mary Ann was born about 1821 in Halling. No children from their marriage have been traced. Henry died quarter ending June 1891 in Strood, age 75. (4) Mary, born 1819 in Meopham. (5) William [6]. (6) Ann, baptized 21/10/1821 in Meopham. (7) Richard, baptized 5/6/1824 in Luddesdown. (8) Edward [7]. (9) Rebecca, baptized 2/11/1828 in Luddesdown. (10) James, baptized 20/6/1830 in Luddesdown. (11) Alfred, baptized 4/1/1835 in Luddesdown.

3.Link to census George ROOTS [Parents]. Baptized 29/1/1792 at St Peter & St Paul Church, Luddesdown, George died quarter ending December 1847, age about 55. Occupation: Labourer in husbandry.

On 8/4/1822, when George was age 30, he married Harriet PARRIS, daughter of Henry PARRIS & Elizabeth HALLONS. Born 1802 in Stansted, it is not known when Harriet died.

They had the following children, all baptized in Luddesdown:

(1) Elizabeth, baptized 10/11/1823. In 1841 Elizabeth had an illegitimate son James ROOTS [10]. (2) Thomas [8]. (3) Jane, baptized 27/5/1827. Jane married Thomas FIELDER, date unknown. (4) Theophilus, baptized 14/3/1830. (5) Ann, baptized 12/8/1832. In the quarter ending June 1848, when Ann was age about 16, she married Charles ADAMS. (6) Eliza, baptized 31/8/1834. (7) Sarah, baptized 31/7/1836. (8) Harriet, baptized 26/8/1838. (9) George, baptized 22/11/1840. (10) Henry [9].

Third Generation

4.Link to census John ROOTS [Parents]. Baptized  23/10/1811 at St John the Baptist Church, Wrotham Road, Meopham, John died before 2/4/1871; he does not appear in the census of that date.

On  18/4/1835, when John was age about 22, he married Hannah PETT in Birling. Born about 1818 in Newstead, Kent, Hannah also died before 2/4/1871.

They had the following children:

(1) William [11]. (2) Mary, born quarter ending September 1837. Mary had two illegitimate children: George Thomas ROOTS [18] & David ROOTS [19]. On 25/12/1868, when Mary was age 31, she married James WOOD. James was born 6/2/1830 in Meopham  & died about 1883. (3) Emma, born about 1839 in Luddesdown. (4) Elizabeth, baptized 19/10/1841 at Meopham Parish Church. (5) James Pett [12]. (6) Matilda, baptized 28/3/1846 at Meopham Parish Church. (7) Emily, baptized 27/3/1848 at Meopham Parish Church. (8) Henry, baptized 30/1/1850 at Meopham Parish Church. (9) Naomi, baptized 23/3/1852 at Meopham Parish Church. (10) Louisa, born about 1854 in Meopham. (11) Thomas, born about 1855 in Meopham.

5.Link to census Thomas ROOTS [Parents]. Baptized 26/6/1814 in Meopham, Thomas died quarter ending March 1871, age about 56. Occupation: Farm Labourer.

On 28/2/1835, when Thomas was age about 20, he married Mary Ann WELLER in East Malling. Mary was born about 1816 in Meopham. It is not known when she died.

They had the following children:

(1) John [13]. (2) Emma, baptized 2/6/1839 in Ryarsh. (3) Henry, baptized 21/6/1846 in Ryarsh. (4) William, baptized 1/6/1851 in Birling. (5) Thomas, baptized 1/4/1855 in Birling. (6) Alfred, baptized 1/11/1857 in Birling.
