George James Luchford’s Attestation Papers (no. 482) record that he joined the East Lancashire Regiment at Chatham, Kent on 31/5/1883, age 15 years. His occupation was given as Tailor. George’s height was 5 feet 1¼ inches, weight 98lbs, chest measurement 30¾ inches. His complexion was sallow, eyes blue, hair light brown. George’s distinctive marks were tattoo spots, 3 on right wrist, one on left. When George was discharged from the army at his own request, in Aldershot on 15/10/1901, age 33 years 4½ months, his height was 5 feet 7 inches, chest measurement 37 inches. His appearance on discharge was recorded as “soldier like”. He had reached the rank of garrison Quartermaster Sergeant. George served a total of 18 years 138 days, of which 11 years 93 days were served in India and 1 year 27 days in South Africa.
