Twelfth Generation
71. Henry John CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1860 in Axminster. Henry John died 1917
in Axminster, age 57. Occupation: Farmer.
In 1886 when Henry John was 26, he married Lydia Joanna CRIDGE, in Membury. Born
1860 in Taunton, she died 1940, age 80.
They had the following children, all born in Devon:
(1) Elsie Alberta, born 11/5/1887. In 1908, when Elsie was age about 20, she married Henry George AYRES. (2) Ida Mary, born 5/2/1889. In 1911, when Ida was age about 21, she married William Charles JENKINS. (3) Mabel May, born 28/5/1890. In 1917, when Mabel was age about 26, she married Ernest W. MILLER. (4) Lillian Beatrice, born 24/10/1891. In 1923, when Lillian was age about 32, she married Edwin Elias WHITE. (5) Flossie Mellitta, born 1893 and died 1894, age 1. (6) Minnie Augusta, born 1895. In 1920, when Minnie was age about 25, she married Henry BAGWELL and died later that year in Beaminster, Dorset. (7) Andrew George Cridge, born 1897. (8) Cecil Harry Cridge [96]. (9) Freda Lydia, born 1902. In 1923, when Freda was age about 21, she married her late sister Minnie’s husband Henry BAGWELL in Axminster.
72. Thomas George CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1864 in Membury, Thomas George died there
5/3/1941, age 77. Occupation: Stonemason.
In 1898, when Thomas George was 34, he married Laura Maria MOSS, in Axminster. Born
1870, Laura Maria died 12/4/1952 in Membury, age 82.
They had the following children, all born Membury:
(1) Frances Louisa Laura, born 1900. Frances Louisa Laura died 1915, age 14. (2) Jessie
Annie, born 1904 and died 30/4/1955, age 51. (3) Albert George, born 1908. Albert
George died 20/10/1944 near Geel, Belgium, age 36. He was buried in Geel War Cemetery,
Antwerpen, Belgium. The cemetery contains 400 Commonwealth burials of the Second
World War, six of them unidentified. (4) Eva Laura Nicola, born 6/12/1911.
73. Robert William CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1869 in Membury. Occupation: Butcher.
In the quarter ending June 1893, when Robert William was age about 24, he married
Mary DARKE in Axminster. Mary was born 1865 and died 1900 in Axminster, age 35.
They had the following children, both born Membury:
(1) William, born and died 1895. (2) Harry Darke, born 1896. Harry Darke was killed
in action on 27/3/1918, age 22, near the village of Pozieres, France during the final
Battle of the Somme. He is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial. The Memorial commemorates
over 14,000 casualties of the United Kingdom and 300 of the South African Forces
who have no known grave and who died on the Somme from 21 March to 7 August 1918.
In quarter ending June 1903, when Robert William was age about 33, he married Susan Maud ATTWOOLL, in Membury. Susan was born quarter ending June 1871 in Weymouth, Dorset.
They had the following children:
(1) Irene, born about 1910. (2) George, born about 1912.
74. Mary Jane CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 31/5/1870 in Membury. Mary Jane died 4/12/1956
in Membury, age 86.
About 1900, when Mary Jane was 29, she married James BALDWIN, son of James BALDWIN
& Frances BAILEY. Born in 1878 in Harrow, James died 15/2/1959 in Membury, age 81.
They had the following children:
(1) Andrew James, born 27/12/1902 in Sudbury. Andrew James died 1/12/1984, age 81.
Occupation: Builder. (2) William George, born 1/5/1904. William George died 17/2/1987,
age 82. On 6/10/1928 when William George was 24, he married Winifred Emily VALENTINE,
in Harrow-
75. William Henry CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1862 in Axminster. William Henry died
in 1934, age 72.
In the quarter ending June 1885, when William Henry was age about 23, he married
Ann HARRIS in Redruth, Cornwall. Ann was born 1864.
They had the following children:
(1) Rita Mildred, born 1886. Rita Mildred died 1978, age 92. In 1920 when Rita
Mildred was 34, she married Leslie James GALLAGHER. (2) Laura May, born 1888 andf
died 1918, age 30. (3) William Richard, born 1891 and died 1961, age 70. In 1955
when William Richard was 64, he married Joyce M. CURTIS.
In the quarter ending June 1897, when William Henry was age about 35, he married Ennetta Ellen THOMAS. Born in 1869, Ennetta Ellen died 1939, age 70.
They had the following children, all born Axminster:
(1) Esme Kathleen, born 1898. (2) Inez Vera, born quarter ending September 1899. (3) Maida Audna Carina, born quarter ending September 1909.
76. Thornhill CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born in 1863 in Axminster. Thornhill died 1897
in Axminster, age about 34. Occupation: Variously servant; general labourer; post
boy.
In the quarter ending September 1890, when Thornhill was age about 27, he married
Mary Amelia MANN in Axminster.
They had the following children:
(1) Ella May, born 1890. (2) Eva Amelia, born 1891. (3) George Thornhill, born
1893 and died 1895 in Axminster, age 2. (4) Thornhill Victor born and died in 1897
in Axminster.
77. Jesse Oliver CHAPPLE [Parents]. Born 1867 in Kilmington, Devon. Jesse Oliver
died 1934 in Axminster, age 67. Occupation: Farm servant (indoors).
In the quarter ending September 1893, when Jesse Oliver was age about 26, he married
Frances Susan MAJOR, in Axminster.
They had one child:
(1) Edgar George Oliver [97].
In the quarter ending March 1910, when Jesse Oliver was age about 43, he married
Emily PARSONS in Axminster.
They had one child:
(1) William Oliver, born 1911.
