The Harris Family of Harrold, Bedfordshire

This is page 3 of 4 tracing the descendants of Joshua Harris and Rebeckah MacQuire, originally of Harrold, Bedfordshire. Later generations lived in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Northamptonshire. It shows the fourth generation link by marriage to the Jones family. Fourth Generation
7. Arthur HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born 1851 in Mortimer, Berkshire, Arthur died 1890 in Reading, age 39. Occupation: Baker. In 1873, when Arthur was age 22, he married Patience Kate CHILDS in Reading. Patience was born about 1850 in Sulhamstead, Berkshire, and died 30/9/1909 in the County Asylum, Buckinghamshire, age 59. They had the following children: (1) Arthur William [ 12 ] . (2) Edward Charles [ 13 ] . (3) Harry , born about 1877 in Reading. (4) Annie , born about 1881 in Reading. 8. George HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born about 1849 in Harrold and baptized there on 27/5/1849. George died 5/11/1910 in Northampton, age 61. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: "HARRIS George of 10 Vernon Terrace Northampton died 5 November 1910 Probate Northampton 9 June to Clara Harris widow and Robert William Harris house decorator. Effects £1198 4s. 9d. Resworn £1261 2s. 6d." (Worth around £151,320 today.) Occupation: Painter and Glazier. On 7/4/1874, when George was age about 25, he married Clara DOUGLAS in St Edmund, Northampton. Clara was born about 1850 in Northampton and died there in 1930, age about 79. They had the following children, all born Northampton: (1) Robert William [ 14 ] . (2) William [ 15 ] . (3) Tom , born 31/3/1881 in St Giles, Northampton and died 1966 in Brackley, Northamptonshire, age about 84. In 1912, when Tom was age about 30, he married Fanny MONK (1882-1964) in Northampton. (4) Kate Rootham , born 29/11/1885 and died 1973 in Northampton, age 87. In 1912, when Kate was age 26, she married Bryan George WATERFIELD (1882-1965), son of Thomas and Martha WATERFIELD , in Northampton. 9. Thomas Henry HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born about 1853 in St Albans, Thomas died there in 1916, age about 63. Occupation: Carpenter and joiner, known to have worked for E. Seymour and Son, Funeral Directors in St Albans. The company remains in business today. On 25/12/1879, when Thomas was age about 26 (although his marriage certificate gives age 21), Thomas Henry married Jane Elizabeth KILBY , daughter of George and Anna KILBY , in St Peter's Church, Walworth, St Mary Newington, Surrey. Born late 1858 in St Albans and baptized 30/1/1859 in St Albans Abbey, Jane Elizabeth died there in 1937, age 78. They had the following children, all born in St Albans: (1) George Francis , born and died 1881. (2) Lilian Maud , born 1883. (3) Jane , born 1885. (4) Florence Alice , born 1887. (5) Percy , born 12/10/1889 and died 1963 in St Albans, age 73. In 1912, when Percy was age 22, he married Winifred Kate PERKINS (1889-1980) in St Albans. (6) Ernest George , born 1892 and died 27/9/1966 in Harpenden, age 73. (7) Elsie Mabel , born 1896. (8) Stanley Ralph , born 1901 and died 1962 in St Albans, age 60. In 1921, when Stanley was age about 20, he married May Doris WARWICK , daughter of Herbert WARWICK and Bertha GENTLE , in St Albans. May was born 21/8/1901 in Harpenden and baptized there 27/10/1901. She died 19/6/1987 in the City hospital, St Albans, age 85. Cause of death: Left hemisphere cerebro vascular accident; Right basal pneumonia: Atrial fibrillation. 10. Frederick George HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born on 9/1/1854 in St Albans, Frederick George died there on 7/12/1943, age 89. He was buried in Hatfield Road cemetery, St Albans. On 18/5/1882, when Frederick George was age 28, he married Esther Rose BURRIDGE , daughter of Harriett BURRIDGE , in St James Parish Church, Kennington, Surrey. Born about 1856 in St Albans, Esther Rose was baptized 29/6/1862 in St Albans Abbey and died 31/1/1921 in St Albans, age 64. She was also buried in Hatfield Road cemetery, St Albans. They had the following children: (1) Arthur Frank [ 16 ] . (2) Sydney Thomas [ 17 ] . (3) Doris Esther , born on 1/8/1892 in St Albans and died 7/1/1968 in Peacehaven, Sussex, age 75. Cause of death certified as Coronary thrombosis; Hypertension; Post influenza bronchitis. On 11/2/1922 when Doris Esther was 29, she married Herbert Henry JONES , son of Richard Williams JONES and Mary LILLYWHITE , in Holy Trinity Church, Penge, London. (4) Frederick [ 18 ] . 11. William Frederick HARRIS [ Parents ]. Born about 1856 in Thornton, Buckinghamshire, William died 1919 in Northampton, age 63. Occupation: Brickyard Labourer. In 1881, when William was age about 25, he married Sarah Ellen PATENALL (1861-1938) in Northampton. They had the following children. William John, Alice Rhoda and Florence Clara were all baptized 15/4/1887 in All Saints, Northampton: (1) William John , born 15/12/1878 in Wellingborough. On 20/3/1902, when William was age 23, he married Lizzie SMITH (1877-?) in All Saints, Northampton. (2) Alice Rhoda , born about 1883 in Wellingborough. (3) Florence Clara , born about 1886 in Wellingborough. (4) Daisy , born 1891 in Northampton. (5) Elsie , born 1900 in Northampton. William Joseph BAKER , born 1890 in Northampton (All Saints), was recorded living with the family in the 1891 and 1911 censuses and described as adopted. He does not appear by that name in the 1901 census but there is a Jack Harris mentioned, born the same year. No birth or death record in Northamptonshire for Jack Harris can be traced. And in 1911 Sarah Ellen was recorded as having 5 children born alive to her which accounts for all of those listed above. An inference we draw is that, for reasons unknown, William was recorded as “Jack Harris” in the 1901 census.

In 1921, when Stanley was age about 20, he married May Doris WARWICK , daughter of Herbert WARWICK and Bertha GENTLE , in St Albans. May was born 21/8/1901 in Harpenden and baptized there 27/10/1901. On 18/5/1882, when Frederick George was age 28, he married Esther Rose BURRIDGE , daughter of Harriett BURRIDGE , in St James Parish Church, Kennington, Surrey. Born about 1856 in St Albans, Esther Rose was baptized 29/6/1862 in St Albans Abbey and died 31/1/1921 in St Albans, age 64. She was also buried in Hatfield Road cemetery, St Albans. They had the following children: (1) Arthur Frank [ 16 ] . (2) Sydney Thomas [ 17 ] . (3) Doris Esther , born on 1/8/1892 in St Albans and died 7/1/1968 in Peacehaven, Sussex, age 75. (3) Florence Clara , born about 1886 in Wellingborough. (4) Daisy , born 1891 in Northampton. (5) Elsie , born 1900 in Northampton. William Joseph BAKER , born 1890 in Northampton (All Saints), was recorded living with the family in the 1891 and 1911 censuses and described as adopted. He does not appear by that name in the 1901 census but there is a Jack Harris mentioned, born the same year. No birth or death record in Northamptonshire for Jack Harris can be traced. And in 1911 Sarah Ellen was recorded as having 5 children born alive to her which accounts for all of those listed above. An inference we draw is that, for reasons unknown, William was recorded as “Jack Harris” in the 1901 census.
