First Generation

 

1.  George JOHNSON.  Born about 1810 in Stepney, London.  George is presumed to have died before 7/4/1861 - he does not appear in that year’s census.  Occupation: Variously butcher, labourer, coal dealer.

 

On 4/4/1831, when George was age about 21, he married Sarah BATCHELOR at St Dunstan, Stepney.  Sarah was born about 1806 in Surrey. It is not known when she died.
 

They had the following children:

 

(1) George, baptized 11/3/1832 at St Dunstan & All Saints, Stepney.  Abode given as Mile End Old Town, father’s occupation butcher.  (2) John Hatchtal [2].  (3) Francis [3].  (4) James [4].  (5) Sarah Maria, born 8/2/ 1845 in Stepney and baptized 20/4/1845 at St Mary, Whitechapel.  Abode given as York Street, father's occupation greengrocer.  (5) Henry, born 4/11/ 1847 in Stepney and baptized 28/11/1847 at St Mary, Whitechapel.  Abode given as York Street, father’s occupation coal merchant.

 

 

Second Generation

 

2. John Hatchtal JOHNSON [Parents]. Born 28/4/1838 and baptized 20/5/1838 at St Mary, Whitechapel.  John’s middle name is unusual to say the least but we have seen the original baptism entry and that is what is says.  Perhaps a more conventional name was offered but misheard (and misrecorded) by the officiating minister, C. A. Richardson. It is not known when John died but it was after 31/3/1901 - he appeared in the census taken on that date. Occupation: Auctioneer, valuer, estate agent.

 

In the quarter ending March 1865, when John was age about 26, he married Mary Ann JOHNSON, daughter of Mary Johnson and an unknown spouse. Born about 1834 in St George in the East. Mary Ann died between 2/4/1871 and 1877 (the year John married again).

 

They had the following children:

 

(1) Stanley John [5]. (2) Clarence Aubrey [6]. (3) Mildred Edith, born quarter ending December 1874 in Hackney.
 

In the quarter ending December 1877, when John was age 39, he married Mary Reseigh HINDE in Stepney.  Mary was born about 1847 in Stepney.

 

They had the following children:

 

(1) Bertha Mary, born quarter ending March 1880 in Hackney. (2) Lilian, born about 1882 in Clapton. (3) John, born about 1883 in Clapton. (4) Ernest, born about 1884 in Clapton. (5) Elsie, born about 1885 in Clapton.
 

3. Francis JOHNSON [Parents]. Born 16/1/1841 in Stepney and baptized 19/2/1843 at St Mary, Whitechapel.  Abode given as York Street, father's occupation greengrocer.  It is not known when Francis died, but it was after 31/3/1901 - he appeared in the census taken on that date. Occupation: House decorator.
 

In the quarter ending September 1865, when Francis was age 24, he married Eliza Mary BROWN in Mile End. Eliza was born about 1839 in Stepney.
 

They had the following children:

 

(1) Francis, born quarter ending March 1867 in St George in the East. (2) Edward Henry, born quarter ending December 1868 in St George in the East.

(3) Eliza Mary [7]. (4) George, born quarter ending March 1876 in Stepney.
 

4. James JOHNSON [Parents]. Born 28/1/1843 in Stepney and baptized 19/2/1843 at St Mary, Whitechapel.  The parish register records  abode: York Street. Father's occupation: Greengrocer.  It is not known when James died, but it was after 31/3/1901 - he appeared in the census taken on that date. Occupation: Tobacconist.
 

On 13/3/1864, when James was age 20, he married Mary Ann DOLMAN, daughter of Robert DOLMAN, a cork cutter, at St Mary Parish Church, St George in the East.  Mary Ann was born about 1839 in Mile End and died quarter ending September 1876 in Medway, Kent, age 38.
 

They had the following children:

 

(1) James Robert [8]. (2) Albert George, born quarter ending March 1866 in Chatham, Kent. Albert George died quarter ending September 1872 in Kent, age 6.  (3) Alice Sophia, born quarter ending December 1867 in Chatham. (4) Henry, born quarter ending September 1871 in Bethnal Green.

Frank Frederick [9]. (6) Sarah, born about 1874 in Bethnal Green.
 

In the quarter ending March 1877, when James was age 34, he married Ellen JOHNSON, daughter of George & Emma JOHNSON of Bermondsey, in Medway, Kent.  Ellen was born about 1850 in Bermondsey Surrey.  There is no known connection, other than this marriage, between these Johnson families.
 

They had the following children:

 

(1) Charles James, born quarter ending September 1877 in Chatham. (2) John, born quarter ending December 1879 in Chatham. (3) Clara, born quarter ending December 1881 in Maidstone. (4) Minnie, born quarter ending September 1886 in Maidstone. (5) George, born quarter ending September 1886 in Shoreditch.
