65. Theophilus CHAPPLE [ Parents ]. Baptized 26/5/1833 in Beer, Theophilus died in 1893 in Watford, Hertfordshire, age about 60. Occupation: variously Coachman; Licensed Victualler. In 1862, when Theophilus was age 29, he married Sarah BAILEY in St James, Westminster. Sarah was born about 1841 in Stockland, Devon and died in 1905 in Watford, age about 64. They had the following children: (1) Thomas Charles , born 1863 in St James Westminster. Thomas Charles died 1883 in Hemel Hempstead, age 20. (2) Sarah Jane , born 1864 in Stockland. In 1883, when Sarah Jane was age about 19, she married William Radley WARRELL in Hemel Hempstead. William was born 1856 in St Albans. (3) Adeline Rose , born 1869 in Harrow Weald. Adeline Rose died 1893 in Hemel Hempstead, age 24. In 1887, when Adeline Rose was age 18, she married George ALLSOP in Hemel Hempstead. George was born about 1859 in Hemel Hempstead. 66. William Minifye CHAPPLE [ Parents ]. Born about 1838 in Beer and baptized there 25/2/1838, William died 1918 in Axminster, age 80. Occupation: variously shoe maker, police constable, fisherman. On 23/10/1861, when William was age 23, he married Elizabeth MILLER in St. Marylebone Parish Church, London. Elizabeth was born about 1838 in Beer and died 1897 in Axminster, age 58. They had the following children: (1) William [ 88 ] . (2) Elizabeth , born about 1867 and presumed to have died before 1871 (she’s not mentioned in the census). (3) Joseph [ 89 ] . 67. John Cole CHAPPLE [ Parents ]. Born on 7/3/1829 in Tiverton and died 16/12/1899 in Clyde, New Zealand, age 70. Occupation: Miner (gold); mining agent; sheep farmer. On 20/9/1860 when John Cole was 31, he married Elizabeth Ewing ALLAN , in Castlemaine, Victoria, Australia. Born on 9/3/1832 in Glasgow, Scotland, Elizabeth Ewing died 16/7/1909 in Christchurch, New Zealand, age 77. They had the following children: (1) Elizabeth Sarah , born 29/5/1862 in East Collingwood, Victoria, Australia and died 22/7/1914 in Christchurch, New Zealand, age 52. Buried 24/7/1914 in Linwood cemetery, Christchurch. (2) William Allan [ 90 ] . (3) Emma Josephine, born 9/2/1866 and died 3/2/1945 in Auckland, New Zealand, age 78. On 30/3/1899 when Emma Josephine was 33, she married Adolphe Monod FEIST , in Petone, New Zealand. Born on 25/4/1870 in Wellington, Adolphe Monod died 9/11/1936 in Papatoetoe, New Zealand, age 66. (4) Agnes Allan , born 9/8/1867 in Alexandra, New Zealand and died 26/8/1944 in Christchurch, age 77. Agnes married Thomas McDONALD , date unknown. Born on 19/6/1855 in Roxburgh, Scotland, Thomas died 9/4/1921 in Sefton, New Zealand, age 65. (5) Mary Allan , born 6/8/1870 in Alexandra, Mary Allan died 1955, age 84. Mary Allan married Donald Johnstone McGAVIN , date unknown. Born on 19/8/1876 in Rochester, Kent, Donald Johnstone died 8/5/1960 in Wellington, age 83. (6) Eleanor Cole , born 1872 and died in 1946, age about 74. On 3/3/1904 when Eleanor Cole was age about 32, she married Adolph ZIMPEL , in Waipukurau. (The family name was subsequently Anglicized to Temple.) Born 1865 in Vienna, Austria, Adolph died 1931 in Malve, age 66. 68. Walter CHAPPLE [ Parents ]. Born 1842 in Newport, Isle of Wight and died in 1923 in Brentford, age 81. Occupation: Hotel keeper. In 1874, when Walter was age about 31, he married Annie BAILEY in Winchester, Hampshire. Born about 1840 in Ropley, Hampshire, Annie died 1882 in Winchester, age about 42. They had the following children, both born Winchester: (1) James Walter , born 28/4/1875. James Walter emigrated to British Columbia, Canada in 1909, joining the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) on 27/7/1915. According to his service record, James left Canada for England on 1/4/1916, arriving on 9/4/916. He transferred to 30th Bn. CEF Shornecliffe Camp, Cheriton, Kent, and discharged on 14/11/1916 on appointment as a commissioned officer. Now a 2nd Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards, James died on 31/7/1917 of wounds sustained in action on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele. He was buried in Canada Farm Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium. The cemetery took its name from a farmhouse used as a dressing station during the allied offensive. Most of the 907 burials are of men who died at the dressing station between June and October 1917. (2) William Robert , born 12/12/1876 and died in 1954 in Harrogate, Yorkshire West Riding, age 77. On 25/10/1883, when Walter was age 41, he married Annie BOUGHTON in St Nicholas, Thames Ditton, Surrey. Annie was born about 1857 in Cobham, Surrey. It is not known when she died. They had the following children all born Winchester: (1) Elsie , born about 1884. (2) Nora , born 3/5/1887 and died 1969 in Weston-super-Mare, age 82. On 12/10/1912, when Nora was age 25, she married Daniel James GRIFFITHS (1878-1965) in Christ Church, Turnham Green, Middlesex. (3) Douglas Boughton , born 1/1/1890 and died 16/8/1959 in Cuckfield Hospital, Sussex, age 69. An entry in the National Probate Calendar reads: “CHAPPLE Douglas Boughton of Greenways Wivelsfield Green Wivelsfield Sussex died 16 August 1959 at Cuckfield Hospital Cuckfield Sussex Probate London 18 November to Helen Josephine Chapple widow. Effects £1191 13s. 2d.” (Worth around £28,131 today.) In 1938, when Douglas was age 48, he married Helen Josephine SHARLAND , nee JONAS , (1901-1960) in Smallburgh, Norfolk. They had one child who may still be living.
