This page charts the descendants of Luke and Jane Howard of Holmfirth, Yorkshire. One branch established themselves in Stockport, Cheshire, another in the Saddleworth area and another in what nowadays would be the suburbs to the south of Leeds. It shows the link with the Bradbury family of Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

Various surname spellings exist - Heward, Hayward - but the modern form of Howard is used here.

Our research is ongoing and we thought it best to share what we have rather than nothing at all.

First Generation

1. Luke HOWARD.  Born between 1792 and 1796, based on his age (rounded down to the nearest 5 years) in the 1841 census, in Yorkshire. The exact date is unknown. It is thought he married Jane DEARNALLY on 26/12/1814 in the parish of Almondbury, Yorkshire, within which the township of Holme lies.

iii. Reuben [4] (1823-1895).

iv. Hannah, born 4/5/1825 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire West Riding and baptized 19/6/1825 at Lane Independent, Holmfirth.

vii. Betty, born about 1836.

Second Generation

2. William HOWARD. Born about 1817 in Holme, Yorkshire West Riding. It is not known when William died but he does not appear in the 1891census so it’s assumed it was before then. Occ: Woollen Cloth Weaver.

Around 1836, when William was age about 19, he married Martha ARMITAGE.  Martha was born about 1817 in Holme.

They had the following children, all born in Holme, Yorkshire West Riding.:

i. Jane, born about 1837

3. Peter HOWARD.  Born 31/12/1820 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire West Riding and baptized 12/4/1821 at Lane Independent, Holmirth. Peter died quarter ending September 1896 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, age 75.

In the quarter ending June 1845, when Peter was age about 24, he married Amelia COLDWELL, daughter of Ebenezer and Lydia COLDWELL, in Huddersfield, Yorkshire.  Amelia was born 8/1/1825 in Holmfirth and died quarter ending March 1903 in Huddersfield, age 78.  See the Coldwell one name study and family history site for more about this surname.

They had the following children:

i. Brook, born quarter ending March 1848 in Huddersfield.

ii. Joe, born 1850 in Cartworth, Huddersfield and died quarter ending September 1869 in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, age 19.

4. Reuben Howard.  Born 14/3/1823 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire West Riding and baptized 8/5/1823 at  Lane Independent, Holmirth. . Reuben died in the quarter ending March 1895 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, age given as 71..  Occupation: Woollen warper.

In the quarter ending September 1849, when Reuben was age 26, he married Sarah SENIOR, daughter of John and Hannah SENIOR.  Sarah was born 20/1/1829 and baptized 14/6/1829, both events in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. She died about 1859.

They had the following children:

i. Senior [8] (about 1851-1902)

ii. Luke, born about 1853. Luke died in the quarter ending March 1899 in Saddleworth, age given as 45.

iii. Vincent [9] (1856-?)

iv. Lister [10] (1859-?).

In the quarter ending September 1861, when Reuben was age 38, he married Catherine FOULKES. Born about 1837 in Manchester, it is not known when Catherine died.

5. Henry HOWARD. Born about 1839 in Holme, Yorkshire West Riding, Henry died quarter ending June 1886 in Holbeck, Leeds age about 46. Occ Woollen Spinner.

In the quarter ending June 1861, when Henry was age about 21, he married Mary HIRST in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Mary was born about 1840 in Dewsbury.  It is not known when she died.

They had the following children:

6. Caleb HOWARD.  Born quarter ending March 1846 in Holme, Yorkshire West Riding, Caleb died quarter ending December 1908 in Holbeck, Yorkshire age 63.  Occ Woollen Spinner and, around 1901, an Iron Foundary Labourer.

In the quarter ending December 1877, when Caleb was age about 31, he married Ann ROSINDALE in Leeds, Yorkshire.  Ann was born about 1850 in Beeston, Leeds.

They had the following children, both born in Beeston:

i. Jane Elizabeth, born quarter ending Match 1885.

ii. Annie, born quarter ending Match 1887.

7. William HOWARD.  Born quarter ending September 1848 in Holme, Yorkshire West Riding.  It is not known when William died. Occ Woollen Mule Spinner.

In the quarter ending September 1867, when William was age about 19, he married Eunice FIRTH in Dewsbury, Yorkshire. Eunice was born about 1845 in Pudsey, Yorkshire and died quarter ending December 1884 in Dewsbury, age about 42.

They had the following children, all born Batley Carr, Yorkshire:

i. Lena, born quarter ending June 1870. In the quarter ending September 1888, when she was age 18, Lena married William Henry LEE in Dewsbury. William was born about 1867 in Earlsheaton, Yorkshire. Lena died quarter ending June 1891, age about 21.

ii. Edith, born quarter ending September 1872. In the quarter ending December 1893, when Edith was about 23, she married Joseph LUMB in Dewsbury. Joseph was born about 1870 in Shawcross, Yorkshire.

iii. Albert Edward, born quarter ending March 1875.

iv. Eliza, born quarter ending June 1877.

In the quarter ending September 1885, when William was age about 28, he married Sarah Esther LISTER in Dewsbury. Sarah Esther was born about 1848 in Batley, Yorkshire. No children from this marriage have so far been traced.

1901: 71 Grange Street, Wortley, Leeds, Yorkshire. William Howard (head) age 52, born Holmfirth Yorkshire occ Willier & Fettler Woollen Mills. Esther Howard (wife) age 52, born Batley Yorkshire. NA ref RG13/4209/115 page 5 sch 41.

8. Senior HOWARD. Senior was baptized 29/6/1851 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire.   Occupation variously given in census records  as Felt hatter; Woollen warper; Roadman.  Senior died 31/12/1901in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire with his age given as “about 55 years”. Cause of death certified as “heart disease”. The Registrar, James Doughty, recorded the informant as “Certificate received from George Brown Deputy Coroner for Worcestershire Middle Division. Inquest held 3rd January 1902.”   It is not known why Senior was living so far  from Yorkshire and his family when he died.

On 30/7/1871, when Senior was age 20, he first married Mary Ann SCROOP, daughter of Cornelius SCROOP, a farmer, in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. Mary Ann was born about 1853, probably in the Saddleworth area.  It is not known when she died.

They had the following children:

i. Sarah Ann, born 1871 (quarter ending December) in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

ii. Maria E, born about 1874 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

In 1880 (quarter ending September), when Senior was age about 29, he second married Elizabeth Hannah SHAW in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. Born 1847 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, Elizabeth had previously been married to Adam BUCKLEY.

Elizabeth and Adam had the following children:

i. Fanny Ann, born 1872 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

ii. Thomas, born 1877.in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

Senior and Elizabeth had the following children:

i. Reuben born 1883 (quarter ending December) in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

ii.  Julius [13] (1888-?).

9. Vincent HOWARD.  Born about 1856 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire. It is not known when Vincent died.  Occupation: Felt hatter.

Vincent married Sarah Jane (born about 1857). They had the following children:

i. Henrietta, born about 1885 in Delph, Yorkshire.

ii. Adeline, born about 1890 in Delph, Yorkshire.

10.  Lister HOWARD.  Born 1859 in Holmfirth, Yorkshire.  It is not known when Lister died. Occupation Felt hatter.

In quarter ending June1890, when Lister was age about 31, he married Mary Jane WRIGLEY.  Born about 1863 in Delph, Yorkshire, it is not known when Mary Jane died.

They had the following children:

i. Clement, born 1895 (quarter ending March) in Stockport, Cheshire.

ii.  Herbert, born 1897 (quarter ending December) in Stockport, Cheshire.

iii.   Albert, born about 1899 in Stockport, Cheshire.

11. Harry HOWARD. Born about 1868 in Birstall, Yorkshire.  It is not known when Harry died. Occ: Warp Dresser in Mill.

12. Herbert HOWARD. Born about 1871 in Leeds, Yorkshire. It is not known when Herbert died but it was after 1901. Occ: variously a soldier (1891) and Warp Dresser in a Woollen Mill (1901).

Around 1897, when Herbert was age about 26, he married Ada (maiden name unknown).

They had the following children:

i. Jesse, born quarter ending June 1898 in Churwell, Yorkshire.

ii. Lee, born quarter ending September 1900 in Churwell, Yorkshire.

13.  Julius HOWARD.  Born about 1888 in Saddlworth, Yorkshire. It is not known when Julius died.  Occ: woollen weaver.  Military: Private, 2nd Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment during WW1.

On 28 April 1917, when Julius was age about 28, he married Ethel BRADBURY, daughter of Joseph BRADBURY and Ann Eliza WRIGLEY in Saddleworth Parish Church. Born 16/11/1893 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire, Ethel died 29/4/1962 in Blackpool, Lancashire, age 68.

They had the following children:

i. Eric Bradbury [14] (1925-1980)

ii Nina Elizabeth, born quarter ending December 1923 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. In the quarter ending June 1947, when Nina Elizabeth was age about 23, she married James MORETON in Blackpool, Lancashire.  Nina Elizabeth died quarter ending September 1967 in Lower Agbrigg, Yorkshire, age about 44.

14.  Eric Bradbury HOWARD.  Born 24/11/1925 in Platt Lane, Dobcross, Saddleworth, Yorkshire.  Eric Bradbury died 3/11/1980 in Hambleton, Lancashire.

On 4/9/1952, when Eric Bradbury was age 26, he married [Living] in Blackpool, Lancashire.

They had 2 children who are still living.
