First Generation

1. John HARRIS.  Born about 1778 in Halling, Kent, John died in 1834 and was buried 21/9/1834, also in Halling, age about 56.

On 4/6/1804, when John was age about 26, he married Hannah CARTER in St Mary, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Hannah was born 1780.  It is not known when she died.

They had the following children:

i. Mary Ann, born 4/8/1805 and baptized 22/9/1805 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.  Mary Ann married James PARRIS.

ii.  William, born 1809 and died 1835.

iii. John [2] (1812-1835).

iv. Hannah, born about 1819.

v. James, born about 1822 in Halling, Kent.

vi. Henry, born about 1826.

Second Generation

2. John HARRIS.  Born about 1812 in Halling, Kent, John died in 1835 age about 23 and was buried 24/7/1835, also in Halling.

On 7/11/1830, when John was age about 18, he married Eliza HEATH in Halling, Kent..  Born in 1810, it is not known when she died.

They had the following children:

i. Ann, born and died 1831 in Halling, Kent.

ii. Eliza, baptized 7/10/1832 in Halling, Kent. Eliza married John Alfred PARRIS.

iii. William [3] (1835-1896).

Third Generation

3. William HARRIS. Baptized 29/3/1835 in Halling, Kent, William died in 1896, also in Halling.

In 1858, when William was age about 23, he married Mary Ann PRYER.  Born in 1839 in West Malling, Kent, Mary Ann died in 1896 age 57.

They had the following children:

i. William John [4] (1859-1931)

ii. John, born 1862 in Halling, Kent.

iii. Thomas, born 1864 in Halling, Kent.

iv. Alfred, born 1865 in Halling, Kent.

v. Eliza, born 1866 and died 1867 in Halling, Kent.

vi. Hannah, born 1869 and died 1875 in Halling, Kent.

vii. Arthur, born 1870 and died 1875 in Halling, Kent.

viii. Matilda [5] (1872-?)

ix. Henry John, born 1876 in Halling, Kent.

x. Louisa, born 1878 in Halling, Kent.

xi. Mark, born and died 1880 in Halling, Kent.

1881: 1 Chapel House, Halling, Kent. William Harris (head, married) age 46 born Halling, Kent occ General Labourer.  Mary Ann Harris (wife) age 42, born West Malling, Kent. Thomas Harris (son) age 17 born Halling, Kent occ General Labourer.  Alfred Harris (son) age 16 born Halling, Kent occ General Labourer. Matilda Harris (dtr) age 9, born Halling, Kent. Louisa O Harris (dtr) age 3 born Halling, Kent.  NA ref RG11/880/110 page 38

1891: 1 Chapel Houses, Halling, Kent. William Harris (head) age 56, born Halling, Kent occ General Labourer. Mary Harris (wife) age 52, born Malling, Kent. Louisa Harris (dtr) age 13, born Halling, Kent. Philip Tasker (son in law) age 36, born Birling, Kent occ General Labourer. Matilda Tasker (dtr) age 20, born Halling, Kent. Celia Tasker (g-dtr) age 3 months, born Halling, Kent. NA ref RG12/652/120 page 19 sch 109.

Fourth Generation

4. William John HARRIS. Born 25/9/1859 in Halling, Kent. William John died 29/12/1931 in Halling, Kent age 72.

On 10/4/1879, when William John was age 19, he married Sarah Ann PANKHURST in Halling, Kent. Born 13/10/1861 in Malling, Kent, Sarah Ann died in 1930 in Strood, Kent age about 69.

They had the following children:

i. William John [6] (1879-1953)

ii. Alfred Thomas, born 28/10/1882 in Halling, Kent

iii. Helen, born about 1884.

iv. Herbert George [7] (1885-?)

v. Arthur, born 1886 and died 1888 age about 2.

vi Eliza Ann, born 1890.

vii. Thomas James, born 1892 and died 9/8/1918, age 26, during the Battle of the Somme.

Thomas James was holder of the Victoria Cross and Military Medal, serving in the Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment.  The London Gazette, No. 30967, dated Friday 18/10/1918, records the following:

 "No. 358 Sjt. Thomas James Harris , M.M., late R.W. Kent R. (Lower Halling, Kent).  For most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty in attack when the advance was much impeded by hostile machine guns concealed in crops and shell-holes. Serjt. Harris led his section against one of these, capturing it and killing seven of the enemy. Later, on two successive occasions, he attacked single-handed two enemy machine-guns which were causing heavy casualties and holding up the advance. He captured the first gun and killed the crew, but was himself killed when attacking the second one. It was largely due to the great courage and initiative of this gallant N.C.O. that the advance of the battalion was continued without delay and undue casualties. Throughout the operations he showed a total disregard for his own personal safety, and set a magnificent example to all ranks."

1901:  3 Malvern Terrace, Halling, Kent. William J Harris (head, married) age 41, born Halling, Kent occ Cement Labourer. Sarah A Harris (wife) age 39 born Birling, Kent. Alfred T Harris (son) age 19 born Halling, Kent occ Cement Labourer. Herbery G Harris (son) age 17 born Halling, Kent occ Farm Labourer. Eliza A Harris (dtr) age 11 born Halling, Kent. Thomas Harris (son) age 10 born Halling, Kent. Ellen M Harris (dtr) age 6 born Halling, Kent. NA ref RG13/719/14 page 20 sch 123.

5. Matilda HARRIS.  Born in 1872 in Halling, Kent.  It is not known when Matilda died.

On 27/11/1890, when she was age about 18, Matilda married Henry Philip TASKER.  Born 1854, Henry Philip died 27/11/1909, age about 55, in Halling Kent.

They had the following children:

i. Celia Ann, born 1891.

ii. Martha Ellen, born 1893.

iii. Harry, born 1896.

iv. Albert, born 1898.

Fifth Generation

6. William John HARRIS. Born 1/8/1879 in Halling, Kent.  William John died 8/3/1953 in Gravesend, Kent.

On 13/4/1902, when William John was age 22, he married Alice Ethel STROUD, daughter of William Edward STROUD and Clara GLADDISH.  Born 23/2/1882 in Halling, Kent, Alice Ethel died in 1982 in Gravesend, Kent.

They had the following children:

i. Herbert William. born 17/1/1903 in Halling, Kent and died 10/2/1983 in Chatham, Kent.

ii. Winifred, born 15/1/1905.

iii. Ernest, born 17/3/1907.

iv. Leonard, born 3/2/1909.

v. Gilbert, born 12/1/1912.

vi. William, born 5/2/1915 and died 1998.

vii. Doris, born 14/6/1917.

viii. Victor, born 16/7/1919.

ix. Grace, born 24/7/1921.

7. Herbert George HARRIS.  Born 1/4/1885.  It is not know when Herbert George died.

On 10/3/1910, when Herbert George was age 24, he married Maude THORNTON.  Born 1888, it is not known when Maude died.

They had the following children:

i. Ethel May, born 13/5/1910 in Halling, Kent and died 22/1/2000, age 89, in Fremantle, Australia. On 4/4/1936, when Ethel May was age 25, she married William James MARTIN in Halling, Kent. William was born 22/9/1909 in Cuxton, Kent and died 3/6/1974, age 64, in Fremantle, Australia.

ii. Doris, born 3/8/1912 in Halling, Kent.

iii. Alice, born 13/8/1913 in Halling, Kent and died 1999.

iv. Herbert, born 25/7/1915 in Halling, Kent and died in 1999 in Sheppey, kent.

v. Kathleen, born 27/1/1918 in Halling, Kent and died in 1998.

vi. Frank, born 18/8/1919 in Halling, Kent and died in 1995.

vii. Kenneth, born 1925 in Halling, Kent and died 1995.

viii. Eric Arthur, born 28/3/1926 in Halling, Kent and died 8/3/1945 during the battle for Arnhem.  See Eric’s citation in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Debt of Honour register.
