Fifth Generation

oldbook15. Simon BRADBURY [Parents]. Of Runninghill Head, Simon was baptized 13/3/1805 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. He died before 1871; he does not appear in the census for that year and his wife is described as a widow.

Simon married Mary Ann, before about 1836 (exact date unknown). Mary Ann was born about 1810 in Saddleworth.

They had the following children:

i. Joseph [23] (1836- before 1887)

ii. John, born about 1840 in Saddleworth, It’s assumed that John died before 1851. He does not appear in the census for that year.

oldbook16. Reuben BRADBURY [Parents]. Of Runninghill Head, Reuben was baptized 25/5/1806 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. Occ: Clothier.

Reuben appears as number 7616 in the snappily titled "The Register of Persons Entitled to Vote at any Election of a Member or Members to Serve in Parliament for The Southern Division of the West Riding of York, between the 30th November 1861 and the 1st December 1862 within the New Delph Polling District". The nature of qualification to vote was given as "share of freehold land and buildings" at Runninghill.

Reuben married Mary, before 1829 (exact date unknown). Mary was born about 1807 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

They had the following children, all born or baptized in Saddleworth:

i. Hannah, baptized 6/9/1829.

ii. Elizabeth, baptized 27/10/1833.

Sarah Bradbury and Charles James Wilcockson had the following children, all born in Saddleworth:

  • John William, born 1861
  • Albert Edward, born 1864.
  • Reuben, born 1868.

iii. Frances, baptized 25/10/1835.

iv. Sarah, baptized 18/8/1839. In the quarter ending September 1860, when Sarah was age 21, she married Charles James WILCOCKSON, son of John WILCOCKSON and Ann BASTOW, in Saddleworth.

v. Ann, born about 1841.

vi. Reuben [24] (1849-1890).

oldbook17. John BRADBURY [Parents]. Of Runninghill Head, John was baptized 15/5/1814 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. He died before 1891. Occ Woollen Weaver

In the quarter ending March 1841, when John was age about 25, he married Mary WRIGLEY in St Mary, Oldham, Lancashire. Mary was born about 1819.

They had the following children, all born in Saddleworth:

i. Sarah, born quarter ending March 1842.

ii. Job, born quarter ending March 1844.

iii. Phoebe, born quarter ending March 1848.

iv. Alfred, born quarter ending December 1851.

v. John, born about 1856.

18. Joseph BRADBURY [Parents]. Joseph was baptized 24/8/1800 and died 15/8/1838 at Marslands, Saddleworth, aged 38.

Ioldbookn 1823, when Joseph was age about 23, he married Hannah, in Saddleworth. Born about 1807 in Saddleworth, Hannah was buried 5/6/1877, age 70.

They had the following children:

i. Elizabeth, baptized 25/11/1832 in Saddleworth.

ii. Joseph, born about 1838 in Saddleworth.

oldbook19. Ralph Bradbury [Parents]. Of Ryefields, according to the 1841 census (HO107/1279). Ralph was baptized 17/10/1794 and died 22/2/1866 in Saddleworth, aged 72.

On 22/2/1816, when Ralph was age 21, he married Mary BROADBENT in Saddleworth. Born about 1796, Mary was buried in Saddleworth on 25/2/1858.

They had the following children:

i. John, baptized 8/6/1818 in Saddleworth

ii. Augusta, baptized 1/10/1820 in Saddleworth

iii. Sarah, baptized 3/11/1822 in Saddleworth.

iv. Phebe, baptized 3/7/1825 in Saddleworth. On 3/2/1848, when Phebe was age about 22, she married James WINTERBOTTOM, son of Robert Winterbottom, at St Chads, Saddleworth.

v. Ann, baptized 23/11/1828 in Saddleworth.

vi. Jonathan Rhodes [25]

vii James, born about 1835 in Saddleworth.

oldbook20. William Bradbury [Parents]. Baptized 15/2/1790 in Saddleworth. It is not known when William died. Occupation: Wool Weaver.

William maried Betty before about 1827.

They had the following children, both born in Saddleworth:

i. John, born about 1827.

ii. Betty, born about 1829.

oldbook21. Benjamin BRADBURY [Parents]. Baptized 8/1/1797. Died quarter ending December 1879 in Liverpool, age 81, and buried 19/12/1879 in Saddleworth. Benjamin was Landlord of Swan Inn, Dobcross (pictured) until the late 1840s when he moved to Liverpoool.

In “At the Sign of the King’s Head”, Ammon Wrigley tells the story of an old folks’ festival held at Dobcross on 28/8/1845, where 140 people (125 of them aged 77 years and upwards) dined at the Kings Head kept by Thomas Lawton and the Swan kept by Ben Bradbury. The inns “would be in stone and timber what the landlords were in flesh and bone, soaked with generous feasting…. I think of Tom Lawton and Bradbury on that dinner day in 1845, as two lusty kings of sirloin. Each would stand at the head of his table stripped to the shirt, with his sleeves rolled up above his elbows, and wouldn’t he slash hot platefuls from the mighty roast. Now and then he would rest for a moment and say, “By th’ Mass this is warm wark….”

 About 1822, when Benjamin was age about 25 he married Jane. Jane born about 1803 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire and was buried there on 19/12/1871.

They had the following children, all born Saddleworth:

i. Mary, born about 1823.

ii.Sarah Ann, born about 1825.

iii. William, born 21/9/1828 in Saddleworth.

iv. James, born about 1835.

oldbook22. Radcliffe BRADBURY [Parents]. Baptized 14/7/1799 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire. It is not known when Ratcliffe died. Occupation: Farmer.

On 18/9/1848, when Ratcliffe was age about 49, he married Ann SHAW, in Saddleworth.

They had the following children:

i. Elizabeth, born about 1845 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.

ii. James Radcliffe, born quarter ending June 1850 in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
